HEATHEN
line up: David Godfrey (vocals)
Doug Piercy (guitar)
Lee Altus (guitar)
Mike 'Yaz' Jastremski (bass)
Darren Minter (drums)
When the thrash-band Heathen is founded in april 1985 in the Bay Area, all band
members got already a lot of experience. Guitarplayer and founder Doug Piercy
played in Anvil Chorus, Exodus and Legacy, drummer Carl Sacco is from Metal
Church, Godfrey was with Blind Illusion and bassplayer Eric Wong was playing in
Sceptre. Only for Lee Altus is Heathen the first band. After a demo, recorded
in 1986, Eric Wong is replaced by Mike 'Yaz' Jastremski. Heathen, meanwhile
becoming very popular in the local underground-scene, records in spring of 1987
their debut album "Breaking the Silence", produced by the famous guitarplayer
Ronnie Montrose. The record is good indeed, and has the same speed as other Bay
Area products. Regarding originality however, Heathen doesn't come close to the
better thrash-bands and the reactions are a bit mellow. A video is made of the
Sweet-cover "Set me Free". End of '87 drummer Carl Sacco leaves the band for
family reasons. He's replaced by Darren Minter.
